“Scare” Appeal

Kids are naturally drawn to yucky stuff like ants to picnics. They’re fascinated with the touch, taste, smell, feel and sight of the world’s most disgusting things. Watch your child pick his nose and examine the treasures he finds like a scientist in a lab. Babies dig into their diapers to see what they find, and many Mommies end up paying a dear price. Even older children can’t help but wonder about yucky stuff; they exclaim, “EWWW!” while moving toward slime, gunk and sludge to get a closer look.

In honor of Pablo Picasso’s birthday this week, I got the girls the ALEX Magnetic Artist Easel. Lori (age 4) enjoys painting on the easel so much in her preschool, but there is only one for the whole class. Now, the girls can be artists all the time!

Try Out This Recipe For A Spooky Dessert!

October 26, 2011 at 09:00 | Posted in Kid Concoctions, Play@Home Mom, Recipes, Reviews | Leave a comment

Lori and I tried a recipe from the ALEX Kid Concoctions book and we wanted to share!

Just in time for Halloween, here is how to make Swamp and Snake Dessert:

You will need:
1 cup of pre-made vanilla pudding (we made a larger quantity and served ours as dessert for the whole family)
3-4 drops of green food coloring
Gummy snakes or worms
Crushed vanilla wafers

Instructions:
1. Mix the pudding and food coloring in a bowl until well blended.
2. Spoon the pudding into a dessert dish.
3. Sprinkle the top of the pudding with the crushed vanilla wafers.
4. Add gummy snakes or worms and serve.

Lori had fun stirring, scooping and, of course, tasting her wormy dessert! EWWW!

Do You Know What Time It Is?

October 19, 2011 at 09:00 | Posted in ALEX Toys, Play@Home Mom, Reviews | Leave a comment

The other night, when we were getting ready for bed, I asked my girls, “Do you know what time it is?” I was just looking for “bedtime” as the answer, but Lori, my four year old, looked at me and said, “It’s thirteen hundred o’ clock”. It sounded like she was starting to get the concept and might be ready to learn how to tell time.

Beneficial Bedtime Routines

The other night, when I told my three-year-old, Yonah, that it was time for bed, his response was to head for the door. “I want to run away,” he said. As frustrating as it was for me that he wasn’t happily following directions, I could at least understand where he was coming from. Who wants to go to bed when there are so many cool things to see… and break?

Today’s Lesson: Teaching is Lots of Fun!

October 5, 2011 at 03:00 | Posted in Family Time, Let's Play, Play@Home Mom, Reviews | 1 Comment

It is already more than a month into the school year and we are in full-on school mode in our family. We get up, eat breakfast, pack lunch, get dressed and are off to school, but not necessarily in that order! I pick up Lori when school lets out and hear all about her exciting day, but school is still on her mind. At home, she pretends to be the teacher and tells her dolls (and little sister) to sit down for story time. She loves it and that is why I knew she would love Let’s Pretend School from ALEX.
