6 Ways to Pretend Play Birthday All Year Round

If your kids are like mine, their birthday is their favorite day of the year. In fact, my kids make elaborate plans for crafts, parties, and gifts months and months before the actual birthday date. All of which are subject to change at any moment.

Birthdays are the best.

So, I just go with it. We pretend play birthday all the time.

We sing Happy Birthday in the car to them, to me, to all our relatives, to our pets, to our toys.

We play birthday party, too.

And do you know what? It’s great to play birthday because while you’re playing, you’re sneaking in lots of learning opportunities.

Here are some ideas for your next pretend play birthday bash.

1. Birthday Cake

Make a birthday cake out of modeling dough , for an extra special cake use glitter dough :-). Decorate with candles. (Unlit.) Sing the Happy Birthday song. Slice with a play knife or play scissors, serve, and pretend to eat.

2. Wooden Birthday Party

Use your ALEX Toys Wooden Sweets Bar to slice and serve cake for your birthday party guests. This includes the candles, plates, knife, cake, and more!

3. Wrap and Unwrap Presents

We love to practice wrapping and unwrapping presents. To make it eco-friendly, we use dish towels for our gift wrapping. Or you could use wrapping paper multiple times.

4. Pin the ____ on the ____

We haven’t ever played “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” but we sure have used it to inspire lots of other games. We’ve played Pin the Eye on the Cyclops (Percy Jackson-inspired) What are your child’s favorite toys or animals? Make your own Pin game!

5. Party Attire

Birthday boys and girls love to wear special birthday attire, so keep the happy birthday hat or birthday sash in the pretend play costume bin to be on hand at all times. It’s a fun craft activity for the party to make your own hats or crowns as well!

6. Other Party Games

Do you remember your child’s favorite party games? Here are some favorites:

Duck, Duck, Goose

Musical Chairs

Pass the Parcel

Treasure Hunt

So don’t worry if your child is obsessed with his birthday 11 months away. (Like mine.) You can play birthday party anytime!
