A Little Science Project: Growing Crystals

My kids recently grew salt crystals using colored salt water on a sponge, and the ALEX Toys Kid Concoctions Grow a Crystal Dino set was a great way to expand their understanding of crystals and how they form!

how crystals grow

The set comes with a small pouch of crystal liquid and two trays to hold a cardboard dinosaur and two cardboard trees. My four-year-old and six-year-old worked together to set it up.

Once it was put together, it was time to hypothesize about what would happen when we added the crystal liquid.

Over spring break, my family and I visited the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii. The trip had been one that we had been planning for a long time and we were all very excited.  For my son who is 7 years old and extremely curious about science nature, the buzz about our upcoming trip, naturally stemmed to conversations about volcanos. He had lots of questions about how volcanos worked and if he would see one while we were on vacation.

Maui’s volcano has not been active in many years and is surrounded by a rainforest, so I knew getting a great view of it while we were away would be unlikely. So before we left, to further embrace his curiosity, and continue the dialogue, we broke out the ALEX/Kid Concoctions  Mix N Blast Volcano Set.

Lori and I tried a recipe from the ALEX Kid Concoctions book and we wanted to share!

Just in time for Halloween, here is how to make Swamp and Snake Dessert:

You will need:
1 cup of pre-made vanilla pudding (we made a larger quantity and served ours as dessert for the whole family)
3-4 drops of green food coloring
Gummy snakes or worms
Crushed vanilla wafers

Instructions:
1. Mix the pudding and food coloring in a bowl until well blended.
2. Spoon the pudding into a dessert dish.
3. Sprinkle the top of the pudding with the crushed vanilla wafers.
4. Add gummy snakes or worms and serve.

Lori had fun stirring, scooping and, of course, tasting her wormy dessert! EWWW!

There’s a new book out by ALEX called Kid Concoctions: Weird Wacky & Wild Stuff You Can Make At Home! written by John E. and Danita Thomas. It is filled with all sorts of easy-to-make at-home concoctions. What kind of concoctions you ask? Things like slime, paints and even toys that kids can make on their own using everyday household items. I have the book and tried out the Super Sidewalk Paint with my girls.
