There are two times when I find parenting particularly challenging: dark, gloomy days that my kids and I are tempted to reflect in our moods and that period of illness where a child is too sick to go to school but not quite sick enough to simply rest.

Here are my favorite ways to conquer the gloom whether it is due to sickness or weather!

My kids had a fantastic time making these “Cool Stuff” Shrinky Dinks! Shrinky Dinks are made out of a special “paper” that shrinks down in the oven, so it’s like making your very own toys! This particular kit has fun robots, vehicles, and other pre-cut shapes to color. The colored pencils come included, so it was a simple project to pull out on a dark, rainy afternoon – and it was also a quick enough project to let the kids do as a reward for getting ready for school really quickly in the morning!

Drawing with ALEX Toys Metallic Crayons

Encouraging creativity is a core feature in my parenting strategy. Creativity has more benefits than I can count, but here are few:

  • Encourages self-expression – drawing and engaging in other creative pursuits gives kids a voice. I have learned a lot from and about my children by listening in as they create.
  • Builds fine motor skills – many creative pastimes help children develop the fine motor movements that are important for scholastic success.
  • Helps children discover passions – Pretend play and creative expression help children discover what truly interests them.
  • A great way to de-stress – I often set out a creative activity for my kids to do after school, as I find it soothes tired nerves and makes it easy to ease back into home life. This also motivates my first grader to get her homework finished (so we can get started on the activity), and it’s a wonderful bonding time for me and my kids.

Now that we’ve covered a few benefits, here are things I do to encourage creativity.

Paint a mug, DIY Gifts, crafts for kidsHomemade gifts are my favorite for the holidays! Our family has made all sorts of items together over the years as gifts for family and friends, from knitted winter caps to jewelry.

One year, using clay, we created an entire chess set for my husband featuring our family members! He loved it! The best part is getting the kids involved. While they may not have the funds to go purchase gifts for the important people in their lives, they will always have the energy and the love to create their own.

Homemade gifts don’t have to be perfect, in fact it’s the imperfections that make them valued in people’s hearts. Try these DIY gift ideas that your kids can make, and teach them the joy that comes with giving of yourself and your time!

Each decoration holds a special part of our family’s Christmas spirit, and every year, we create at least one handmade decoration to add to our collection. Sometimes our handmade décor lasts only one year, while others become valued pieces that last from year to year, priceless pieces of our family history.

Kids love creating Christmas decorations, and there are so many quick and easy holiday décor projects that you can create with your children. Here are a few ideas to get you started on your own handmade holiday collection!
