Over spring break, my family and I visited the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii. The trip had been one that we had been planning for a long time and we were all very excited.  For my son who is 7 years old and extremely curious about science nature, the buzz about our upcoming trip, naturally stemmed to conversations about volcanos. He had lots of questions about how volcanos worked and if he would see one while we were on vacation.

Maui’s volcano has not been active in many years and is surrounded by a rainforest, so I knew getting a great view of it while we were away would be unlikely. So before we left, to further embrace his curiosity, and continue the dialogue, we broke out the ALEX/Kid Concoctions  Mix N Blast Volcano Set.

An Attitude of Gratitude

I hate to say it, but the way we celebrate Thanksgiving is not exactly conducive to cultivating gratitude in our children. We buy lots of food, maybe even some new clothes, stuff our faces and then camp out in front of the TV to digest and yell at the Giants to get the ball to the end zone. Where exactly is the “Thanks” in Thanksgiving?

Review: My Layered Lacing

Katie over at Katies Nesting Spot reviewed quite a few ALEX Toys.  Here’s an excerpt from her review on our Lacing Activities products:

This is an activity you can get years of fun out of. These are great for fine motor skills and getting those little fingers nimble and ready for writing.

I have to say I love the foam lacing shapes. I wish I’d purchased these for her before. I like them a lot better than the wooden or cardboard lacing shapes I was more familiar with. The foam has a little give in it. As toddler hands push and pull on it, it can move a little and sometimes that has enabled my daughter to be able to get the lace through. The pliable nature of the foam makes this a more enjoyable activity for her and I’m not worried about things tearing as it snaps back into place. This product, and many others also by ALEX Toys has also won the National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval.

Carrie at 5 Minutes for Books, a 5 Minutes for Mom website, reviewed our Undercover Super Sleuth Kit.

“This kit is amazing! It’s perfect for one child, or for multiple children to share together. There are two code wheels so that the ah hem, children, can write and crack their own codes.

There are code files, teaching children how to hide secret messages with the use of a telephone, using a scytale, Morse code, a code grid, etc., etc., etc. They can learn how to write and make use of over 10 different codes to communicate something like, ‘The neighbor forgot to take out his trash last week. What do you think that means?’ The possibilities are endless!”

We’re so glad she enjoyed it! Read the rest of Carrie’s review and enter to win a kit of your own here: http://www.5minutesforbooks.com/2796/undercover-super-sleuthdetective-kit/
